The studio rejected the choice, Coppola made demands they couldn't refuse, and lightning struck twice as "The Godfather Part II" was feted with the same number of nominations, becoming the first sequel to ever win best picture.
Taken as a pair, the two "Godfather" films are considered among the greatest of all time.
